if you happen to work here in san jose, the minimum wage jumps $2 from $8 to $10 an hour. one restaurant here in san jose starting paying their workers that $10 an hour back in december. the owner who owns pizza my heart in san jose says he wants to see how the new pay increase works and if it impacts the bottom line and admits prices on the menu had to increase when wages increased. other businesses say they may have to make similar adjustments, charging customers more in the end. the san jose minimum wage increase was approved by voters back in november and at pizza my heart, the transition, so far, it has been government. >> we raised prices roughly 3 percent overall and that was kind of the test to make sure it covers it, and it has so it has been neutral to us overall. who has the highest minimum wage in the nation, san francisco topped the list with workers making $10.55 an hour and santa fe, new mexico, people are paid $10.51 for minimum wake and now san jose is the third highest in the nation paying workers $10 an hour according to the united states department of labor

is in san jose this morning. people voted for this. >> reporter: people voted for this in november. what's happening today is minimum wage workers in san jose will now make $10 an hour. that's up from $8 an hour. this is the largest minimum wage pay increase in the nation. now, again, voters approved measure d in the fall. that's why the $2 increase is happening. this is of course happy news for the thousands of minimum wage workers in the city. but san jose's mayor is concerned that some businesses might not be able to handle the hike. he is worried people could lose their jobs. >> as the minimum wage goes up, small businesses in particular will make accommodations. some will absorb the cost, some will pass it on to their customers and some will have to decrease jobs and lay people off. >> a campaign is also kicking off today to encourage people to spend their extra money from those earnings in the city. the slogan is, earn and spend in san jose. it will be displayed in business windows. the minimum wage in california is $8 an hour. in san j

to spring forward tonight. >>> today the family of a san jose man found stabbed to death at an almaden park will gather to honor his life. 27-year-old errick wright was killed at guadalupe oak grove park wednesday afternoon. 27-year-old vincent gallegos was arrested with the murder. police say gallegos was at the scene when they arrived and he and the victim knew each other. he told investigators that he found wright bleeding in the park but his story didn't add up. the suspect was not able to explain why he had blood on himself. >> doesn't feel real right now. i just don't know what could have taken place where this guy to kill my brother like that. >> i want to know what my son could have been you know that could have been that detrimental to where he had to be brutally stabbed. >> police did find a knife at the scene. it is now at the crime lab undergoing tests to see if it is connected with the killing. >>> detectives are piecing together the bizarre murder of a 69-year-old man from san jose. stanley jacobson was found stabbed to death this week. his body was hidden beneath a pile of li

at a homeless encampment near san jose's mineta international airport will soon be on the move. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in san jose with more details on the city's effort to clear out that homeless camp. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the city has already warned the people who live on this large swath of land on spring street between heading and taylor given them warning that they had to leave. today they're going to carry out that warning around 9:00 the city's point man on homeless encampments says they'll come out here and force these people to leave. it's not like san jose doesn't have homeless encampments. there are roughly 50 to 60 in the city limits. what makes this one unusual is that it is in the wide open. it's not near a waterway. it's not cover by brush. it's very visible to people. you have roughly 100 people and maybe 70 camps just spread out through acres and acres of land here out in the wide open. it's unsightly. it's of course unsanitary and there's concerns about crime though san jose police department does tell the

but the restaurant manager is here on the scene. san jose police have made an arrest in the murder of a man reported missing two weeks ago. what is bizarre is where any found the body. the man vanished from a senior apartments on february 18. police checked his apartment then but did not find him. the investigation brought them back to the apartment yesterday and that is when and where they discovered his body. he was stabbed. investigators and a close friend wonder how he got there. >> the police came a month ago and they could not find him and now they find him? you cannot overlook a body the. >> he obviously wasn't here. the fact he turned up here again later...it is something we will have to put back together like a puzzle. place will only say they are confident they have the right person in the custody for the murder. >> santa cruz begins the slow process of healing after saying goodbye to two police officers killed in the line of duty. thousands gathered for an emotional memorial yesterday. officers, dignitaries and friends and family honored and celebrated the lives of the two santa cruz offi

favro is live in south san jose at the hilltop manor senior apartments to display how this happened. marianne? >> reporter: janelle, not only did relatives and police miss the body, but on february 26 managers here investigated the apartment and also did not find stanley jacobson's body. neighbors here at the senior apartments in san jose say they're saddened to know the man known as the magician was murdered in his home. this is the woman accused of stabbing him to death, 46-year-old regina butler. neighbors describe her as his girlfriend. police say they've been investigating her on suspicious of defrauding jacobson out of insurance money. he had early stage dementia. his granddaughter reported him missing and ultimately found him in his apartment hidden beneath a pile of linens and blankets. she had been to the home three times since her grandfather had gone missing. >> based on the investigation of what we know right now, we believe he was murdered early february, probably between february 5 and the 8th. >> reporter: investigators believe the body was repeatedly missed despite t

police say san jose police officers were on a special task force in plain clothes driving unmarked cars and working a separate case when they spotted the two-door honda which was stolen. the sheriff deputies say the driver of the honda threw it in reverse, he aimed to an officer. the officer hit the driver in the head with one spot. witnesses wondered if the suspect knew they were undercover police. fast food restaurant at the shopping center. a san jose police officer that happened to be on a traffic stop a block away heard the crash and was the first responder out on the scene. the paramedics came out and declared the driver dead on the scene. police think they know who he is but are not releasing his name until they are able to notify the family. they think he is in his late 20s, early 30s. no obvious signs of drinking and driving but they won't be able to rule that out for sure until toxicology tests, not something the coroner would be performing. in the foregrounds, a white van pulling up. we believe that coroner is coming on the scene which means that maybe the scene will be cleared up sooner than initially thought. the eta was around 7:00. with the coroner coming on the skeep, it is quite possible it could be sooner. for more on your morning commute, i'm going to send it over to traffic anchor, mike inouye. mike? >>> as you saw, bob talked about the coroner potentially arriving on scene. that white van we just saw. that may be the issue. let's look at some

to san jose. we are in san grows -- we start with claudine in santa cruz. >> reporter: we are standing at the start of the procession. the folks told to gather here starting about seven this morning and in the last several minutes we have seen activity. take a look to the side of me. you can see three buses that are lined up along this street. they have the santa cruz police emblem on them and a sign. we assume possibly members of the department will ride these buses down the procession. i want to show you what's happening in this parking lot just near the boardwalk here. you can see motor officers starting to line up their motorcycles. they will stage there and then move to the start of the procession. this procession, ready to leave about 8:45 but everybody was told to gather about seven this morning so it'll just get busier. the morning has started in this community. everybody is still trying to dumb to terms with the loss of the two officers. there was a memorial last night at the santa cruz memorial funeral home. just a chance for people, friends, family, strangers to come. there
